About this Project:

Linear Control Systems was tasked with improving environmental monitoring and control throughout the mall areas of White Rose Shopping Centre. The project presented several installation challenges due to the buildings construction / live operation.

The shopping centre’s walls are fully clad or glass, making traditional cable routes impractical or impossible in many areas. Where cabling was possible, sensor locations would have been directly beneath supply air vents, resulting in inaccurate temperature readings and poor environmental control.

By adopting Sontay’s LoRaWAN wireless technology, Linear Control Systems delivered a flexible and highly effective environmental monitoring solution that overcame the building’s physical constraints. The installation not only improved operational performance and energy efficiency but also future-proofed the shopping centre’s building management system for further smart building enhancements.

Project Description

The client required a solution that would provide accurate temperature and CO₂ monitoring without the disruption, cost, and limitations associated with installing new cabling.

To overcome these challenges, Linear Control Systems specified and installed Sontay LoRaWAN wireless temperature and CO₂ sensors.

A single LoRaWAN wireless hub, complete with an aerial extension, was installed to provide reliable coverage across the entire shopping centre mall. The wireless network eliminated the need for extensive cable installations while allowing sensors to be positioned in the most effective locations for accurate environmental monitoring.

The system was seamlessly integrated into the existing Trend IQVision BMS, providing real-time visibility of:

  • Temperature
  • CO₂ levels
  • Sensor battery status

This integration enables facilities management to monitor all sensor data from a central interface while maintaining the simplicity and reliability of the existing BMS.

The Results

The new wireless sensing solution has been incorporated into the control strategies of several air handling units (AHUs), enabling demand-based optimisation of ventilation and temperature control.

Key benefits include:

  • Elimination of complex and costly cable installations
  • Accurate sensor placement for improved environmental control
  • Full integration with the existing Trend IQVision BMS
  • Enhanced energy efficiency through optimised AHU operation
  • Real-time monitoring of temperature, CO₂ levels, and sensor health
  • A scalable, future-ready platform capable of supporting additional energy-saving initiatives, including occupancy-based control strategies
